Water departments require ALL backflows to be inspected annually.

What Backflows do

A backflow prevention device stops the contamination of potable (drinking) water from being contaminated by pollution from outside systems.  Most properly functioning water supply systems have enough pressure to flow naturally from tap to drain to waste.  But when pressure fails or falls due to either a water main break, a frozen pipe that bursts, or during high use, contaminated water is able to flow back into the potable supply.  This can be extremely detrimental in cases where sewage backs unknowingly into a previously clean water supply or when insufficient pressure is available for a sprinkler system during a fire emergency.
